(More customer reviews)It works like nothing else.My remote is branded Hampton Bay model# 838-956, controlling a Hunter ceiling fan in the bedroom.I use this gadget every night in the summer for the past 4 years, so I can raise the air conditioning setpoint and save some energy.Ceiling fans use less energy than central AC.
This wireless ceiling fan thermostat and light control works, but has some quirks:
1. the wireless range may be 50-feet in open air, but it had occasional problems with penetrating a shallow partition wall (4 inches of drywall and studs in the same room) at 8-foot-range.Every 3-4 months in the middle of the night, the light receiver would get a spurious signal and go to 100% on, waking us up - this was fixed by relocating the remote to direct line-of-sight.
2. The thermostat has the annoying feature of unadjustable 4-degrees-F differential between fan-speeds when in AUTO-FAN mode. That makes it simple but I would prefer to adjust the differential as well as setpoint. So when I make setpoint 72F, then FAN-LO starts at 72, FAN-MED at 76, FAN-HI at 80.When temperature falls then FAN-HI stops at 79, FAN-MED at 75, FAN-LO at 71 (fan turns OFF).
Good stuff:
3. The light is dimmable for dimmable lights in 1% increments - press and hold to dim - easy.Tap to turn off/on at the preset dim level.AVOID putting a non-dimmable CFL in there.
3A. The batteries have lasted 2-3 years so far.
4. manual FAN speed control is available.Good for drying off after a shower.
Don't-care-stuff:
5. FAN-timer and LIGHT-timer are available - I never use them.
6. No fan-reverse switch on the remote.Manual reverse is on the fan.
Conclusion:
This thermostat/remote control saves me money by allowing me to maintain the bedroom comfort level while raising the central AC setpoint. It's the only retail gadget that I have found that will easily enable room temperature control of a ceiling fan-light.I like it a lot.
Note: I am an engineer in commercial building automation. This is an easy DIY installation that requires taking the light assembly and wiring apart so it helps to have three hands, and it only took 15 minutes.
FYI turn OFF the ceiling fan and light when you leave the room because moving air only cools people - it does not cool the room.
Good luck.
